Edwardsville Township Park History

Edwardsville Township acquired 27.45 acres of land, which is now the Edwardsville Township Park.  The park project was undertaken following tremendous community support from various civic organizations.

The first phase was the acquisition and development of ten acres.  Grant funds were not available for the development but the Township received $20,000 toward acquisition costs.  This development includes 6 small shelters with picnic tables, BBQ grills, horseshoe pits, a large open area of informal games, a rest room, two small swing units, a tot play area and a commemorative flagpole.  The flagpole was funded by local community groups who donated for this project.

The development on the other seven acres that fronts Center Grove Road includes a large unit of playground equipment, tennis courts, soccer field, rest room, a large shelter to accommodate 160 people (which may be reserved for groups of a 100 or more) and two farm silos which have been repaired and are used for storage.

The first clearing began for the park in April 1977 and it was dedicated on July 13, 1980.  Parking facilities had to be enlarged before the park was dedicated to accommodate those using the park.  Future development of the park was contingent on the availability of funds and the availability of land.  They saw that the pond needed to be developed and hoped that eventually a fishing pier with guardrails could be built to accommodate the handicapped. The restrooms, parking areas, and large shelter are now accessible to the handicapped and there is a sidewalk to the tennis court so that the handicapped may enjoy and play on the courts. The Township Park was planned so that maintenance costs would be low.  The Park to this day is still serving the residents of Edwardsville Township and will be enjoyed by all for many years to come.
